Volunteer

Volunteer roles

Volunteers make the research and the free education possible. Every role below is remote unless noted, the hours are flexible, and each one is described as it is rather than as a pitch.

Grant writer

Map the foundations that fit our work, draft letters of inquiry and full proposals, and build a reusable grant library.

Who it suits. Clear writing and comfort with scientific material. Grant experience is welcome but not required.

Time. 3 to 5 hours a week. Remote.

Nonprofit lawyer (pro bono)

Volunteer agreement, governance documents, California charity compliance, and the legal questions that come up as the organization grows.

Who it suits. A lawyer with California nonprofit experience.

Time. Project based rather than weekly. Remote.

Accountant (CPA, volunteer)

Set up bookkeeping, support the annual IRS filing, and put basic financial controls in place.

Who it suits. A CPA. The scope is modest, a pre-revenue charity with simple books.

Time. Modest and periodic. Remote.

Science writer and research assistant

Literature reviews, source verification, fact checking, and chapters for the coming volumes.

Who it suits. A science background at any level, from undergraduate to postdoctoral, and the ability to read primary literature. Null findings and weak evidence get reported exactly like positive ones.

Time. 2 to 6 hours a week. Remote.

Designer and content creator

Infographics that explain a mechanism in one picture, social content carrying real information, and illustrations for the books.

Who it suits. Design skill and a low tolerance for hype. A calm, evidence-led visual language, the opposite of the psychedelic cliche.

Time. 2 to 5 hours a week. Remote.

Scientific coordinator

Run the expert panel process for validating the measure, coordinate the raters, and keep meticulous records.

Who it suits. A graduate student, postdoctoral researcher or research coordinator in psychology or public health. Familiarity with Delphi methods or scale validation is a real advantage.

Time. 3 to 5 hours a week. Remote.

Measurement adviser (psychometrics)

Help build a validated scale for the twelve dimensions of flourishing that our research is organized around.

Who it suits. Psychometrics expertise.

Time. By arrangement. Remote.

Academic English editor

Edit federal submissions, website pages and regulatory comments.

Who it suits. Native-level English and real editing experience with scientific or academic text. A background in psychology or public health helps. The central skill is restraint.

Time. 2 to 5 hours a week. Remote.

Events coordinator

Produce the virtual convening planned for late 2026.

Who it suits. Experience coordinating virtual events, professional or volunteer. Calm under pressure, obsessive follow-through, and clear written communication with senior academics.

Time. 2 to 4 hours a week, rising near the event. Remote.

Marketing manager

Build the outreach plan, the one-pager, and the pitch for each audience.

Who it suits. Marketing or communications experience, nonprofit experience welcome but not required. Clear writing and a low tolerance for hype.

Time. 3 to 5 hours a week. Remote.

Web developer

Maintain and develop metanoia-ca.org.

Who it suits. HTML, CSS and JavaScript fundamentals, an accessibility-minded approach, and static-site experience as a plus. One constraint stated openly: the site wording is aligned word for word with our federal submissions, so this role is engineering rather than rewriting.

Time. 2 to 5 hours a week. Remote.

Social media manager

Run Instagram and Facebook against the content calendar.

Who it suits. Command of Instagram and Facebook and strong short-form writing. Every post is drawn from approved material, checked before it goes out, and stays inside each platform terms of service. All the work is manual, with no automation tools.

Time. 2 to 4 hours a week. Remote.

Administration and operations

Mail, forms, and deadline tracking.

Who it suits. Administrative or operations experience, comfort with checklists and recurring deadlines, discretion with internal documents, and clear written English. Familiarity with United States nonprofit compliance is a plus.

Time. 2 to 4 hours a week. Remote.

Local volunteer, Sacramento

Local presence and the errands that need someone on the ground.

Who it suits. Based in the Sacramento area.

Time. By arrangement, in Sacramento. Remote.

Volunteers are not onboarded until the volunteer agreement is in place. Until then we read applications and talk to people.
